When Sergio Angel, MD, and Allie Angel, MD, met in medical school, they knew they’d be together for the long haul – wherever that journey took them. Turns out, that journey took them to the same family medicine practice at Northeast Georgia Physicians Group (NGPG) Oakwood, and they couldn’t be happier.
“I always knew I wanted to come back to this area,” Dr. Allie Angel said. “It’s been a dream for me ever since I was a teen volunteer at the hospital here. My experience was such a positive one because everyone was so welcoming and kind. The fact that I was able to be in the hospital surrounded by medicine solidified that I was meant to be in this field.”
Dr. Sergio Angel also wanted to be a doctor from a young age. He remembers telling his mother that’s all he wanted to do with his life.
“There’s just something that makes me want to take care of people,” Dr. Sergio Angel said.
The native Spanish speakers were born in Colombia and moved to the United States as children – Dr. Allie Angel to Suwanee, Georgia, and Dr. Sergio Angel to Houston, Texas. It wasn’t until medical school at International American University in Vieux Fort, St. Lucia, that they met and fell in love. As they were searching for places to complete their residencies, they attended a conference to learn about family medicine residency programs. That’s where something caught Dr. Allie Angel’s eye.
“I was looking around and saw the laurel leaf logo,” Dr. Allie Angel said. “I remembered that logo from when I was 15 and volunteering at the hospital.”
They both learned more about the residency program and ended up interviewing in person with the Graduate Medical Education program at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. The program was a top choice of theirs, and they both were accepted.
“I think we both just enjoyed serving the diverse and close-knit community here in north Georgia during our residency,” Dr. Sergio Angel said. “So, we thought if we enjoyed that so much, why leave? If there was a way to continue serving this community, we wanted to do it.”
And that’s exactly what they’ve done. As providers at NGPG Oakwood, both doctors joined an expert team at an established practice in a growing area of south Hall County. NGPG Oakwood is open Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is located at 3931 Mundy Mill Road, Suite A.
