Dr. Katia Adams returns to NGPG in Dawsonville to care for a community close to her heart

With experience that spans continents and specialties, Katia Adams, MD, knows what it means to feel at home in a community. Her career has taken her from surgical suites in São Paulo, Brazil to family medicine clinics across the United States, and she’s now returning to Northeast Georgia Physicians Group (NGPG) Dawsonville – a community she’s long considered family.

“There’s just something special about Dawsonville,” Dr. Adams said. “It’s always felt like home to me, and I’m honored to return and continue building relationships with primary care patients I’ve known and those I’ve yet to meet.”

Before moving to the U.S., Dr. Adams earned her medical degree and completed her residency in vascular surgery at Santa Casa School of Medicine in São Paulo. She then spent 10 years practicing as a vascular surgeon in Brazil and served as an instructor for vascular surgery residents.

After relocating in 1996 to be closer to family, she completed a second residency – this time in family medicine – at the University of Cincinnati and has since spent more than two decades caring for patients of all ages.

Dr. Adams previously cared for patients at NGPG from 2011 to 2018 and also volunteered at Good Shepherd Clinic in Dawsonville during that time.

Originally from São Paulo, Dr. Adams now lives in northeast Georgia with her husband, Mauro Pires, a professional tennis coach.

“We have two adult children who live in Atlanta, which was the key reason we moved to the U.S.,” Dr. Adams said. “And now we love being a part of the Dawsonville community.”

Outside of work, Dr. Adams enjoys photography, traveling, improving her tennis skills and creating small, stuffed toys through amigurumi.

NGPG Dawsonville is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is located inside Medical Plaza 1 at 108 Prominence Court, Suite 200. Call 706-216-3238 to schedule an appointment or visit ngpg.org/adams to learn more.
