When her youngest son was born with complex congenital heart disease, South Carolina native Shravya Khambhati, DO, had to change the way her mind was wired to think – from doctor to parent. It was an experience she said changed the way she helps her patients, and now she’s bringing that new level of understanding to Northeast Georgia Physicians Group (NGPG) Flowery Branch to provide primary care.
“I never expected to learn some of my biggest lessons about medicine from being a patient’s mom instead of a patient’s doctor,” Dr. Khambhati said. “It’s made me a lot more attentive to things like listening, being more present and taking the time to explain why I’m recommending a treatment plan with the people I see every day.”
Dr. Khambhati grew up in Greenville and earned her medical degree from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Spartanburg, South Carolina, before completing her family medicine residency at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois. She went on to complete a fellowship in geriatric medicine at Boston Medical Center, a specialty she said grew out of growing up in a multi-generational household.
“I want to help my patients maintain their independence and quality of life as they age,” Dr. Khambhati said.
She’s lived and practiced in the New England and Chicago area since her residency training, so coming to north Georgia feels a bit like coming home for her family. Dr. Khambhati and her husband, Jay, an interventional cardiologist who recently joined Georgia Heart Institute, have three young children. Outside of work, they enjoy traveling, spending time together and with friends and being outdoors.
