At just 4 years old, Shaina Alleyne, MD, told her mom she wanted to be a doctor so she could make medicine that tastes like bubble gum and grape juice for children with cancer. That early desire to care never went away, and after years of education and training, she’s combining it with clinical expertise to provide primary care at Northeast Georgia Physicians Group (NGPG) Chestnut Mountain.
“Caring for children and adolescents into adulthood is something that’s always been close to my heart,” Dr. Alleyne said. “Family medicine gives me the chance to do that, while also caring for their parents and grandparents. It’s such a privilege to walk with entire families through every stage of life.”
Dr. Alleyne earned her bachelor’s degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C., before earning her medical degree from Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. She went on to complete her family medicine residency training with Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s Graduate Medical Education program in Gainesville.
“Although I was born in New York, most of my childhood was spent in Decatur and Lithonia, so this area really is home for me,” Dr. Alleyne said. “That’s why I’ve made it a point to get involved in the community by volunteering with local non-profits like Good News Clinics and Mercy Matters and teaching health education programs in local schools.”
Dr. Alleyne loves exploring northeast Georgia’s trails and waterfalls in her free time. She also enjoys puzzles, painting, crocheting, gardening and making her own shea butter products infused with herbs she grows herself.
“I have family in Barbados, and I visit them often, which has given me a love for the sea,” Dr. Alleyne said. “So, when I travel for vacation, I really enjoy spending time near the water and exploring new cultures through food.”
