From volunteering to care for people in South America to serving patients in rural Kentucky, Taylor Rives, MD’s journey to provide specialized cancer care is rooted in helping other women overcome dire circumstances. Now she’s bringing her advanced fellowship training and expertise to join Chelsea Chandler, MD, at Northeast Georgia Physicians Group (NGPG) Gynecologic Oncology.
“My passion for cancer care was deeply influenced early in my medical training when I volunteered in Peru, where I screened women for cervical cancer who otherwise wouldn’t have been helped,” she explained. “Seeing their gratefulness for the clean bill of health or the commitment to get them the life-saving care they needed made it clear that gynecologic oncology was the right path for me.”
Originally from Arizona, Dr. Rives earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. She completed her OB/GYN residency at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh and completed a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Kentucky, where she focused on rural cancer care and health disparities.
“Women who are facing a cancer diagnosis deserve the best possible care, regardless of their genetic or economic background,” said Dr. Rives. “And that’s exactly what we’ll provide them at our office in Gainesville, without the need to drive to Atlanta.”
Dr. Rives clinical interests include robotic and minimally invasive surgery, precision medicine for endometrial cancer and the treatment of ovarian, cervical, and vulvar cancers. She has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed publications and provided national presentations about research spanning molecular tumor testing, chemotherapy-related cognitive effects and genomic disparities.
“We are excited to welcome Dr. Rives to our team,” said Dr. Chandler. “Her commitment to advanced gynecologic cancer care, combined with her impressive academic background, makes her a valuable asset to our patients and the community. I look forward to working alongside her as we help women who need us most.”
Dr. Rives and her husband, a Gwinnett County native, are excited to return to the area to be closer to family and become part of the northeast Georgia community. Outside of work, she enjoys hiking, boating, traveling and spending time with their newborn baby and dog, Charlie.
