For patients with overactive adrenal glands, adrenal conditions such as Cushing’s disease, or an adrenal tumor, a physician may recommend an adrenalectomy as a part of your treatment plan. Your body has two adrenal glands located at the top of each kidney. These glands are part of the endocrine system and produce hormones that affect the body’s metabolism, blood pressure, blood sugar and other functions. These small glands are vital to your body’s basic functions, and adrenal disorders can significantly impact your life.
What is an adrenalectomy?
An adrenalectomy is a surgical procedure to remove one or both adrenal glands. The procedure can be done using minimally invasive techniques (allowing for smaller incisions and faster recovery times) or with an open approach. Your surgeon will decide which surgical approach is best depending on your circumstances or tumor size.
What to Expect When Recovering From an Adrenalectomy
If only one of your adrenal glands was removed, your other adrenal gland can make up for the lost hormone production over time. If both of your adrenal glands are removed, you will be prescribed medication to supplement your body’s hormone production.
If your surgery was done minimally invasively, you’ll likely be able to go home on the same day as your procedure. If you had an open surgery, you may need to stay overnight in the hospital until your provider decides you are ready to be discharged.
Your care team will give you instructions for your recovery, which may include:
- Proper wound care for your incision(s)
- How to take any new medications
- Guidance for proper rest, activity and modifications to your diet
Most patients recover from an adrenalectomy in 2-3 weeks. Your physician can help you plan when to return to work, school or other normal activities.
